reaching out into the sunlight

Madison

Dear Uncles and Aunties,
Thank you for your care and support over the years. Although I have encountered many setbacks and difficulties along the way, with your companionship, care, and encouragement, I have managed to overcome them and have grown a lot. Thank you to the uncles and aunts who are far away. Every time I think of you, I am deeply moved. Even though we are not related by blood, you love me as if we were family, and for that I am very grateful. Rest assured, even though I find my studies challenging, I will do my very best to learn. Although I do not know what the future holds for me, I will strive to live well and become a useful person.

In the vast river of my memories, many events pass by like fleeting meteors. However, one particular moment remains as bright as a shining star, always illuminating my heart.

It happened on a bitterly cold winter day when my mother and I went to the supermarket to shop for the New Year. The supermarket was bustling with people, filled with a lively festive atmosphere. Shoppers moved between the shelves, carefully selecting their desired goods, their faces brimming with anticipation for the upcoming New Year.

After finishing our shopping, we carried our bags out of the supermarket. At that moment, I noticed an elderly man curled up in a corner near the entrance. He was dressed in tattered clothes, his silver hair disheveled, and his face covered with deep wrinkles from years of hardship. His worn-out cotton jacket could barely shield him from the biting cold, and he trembled in the freezing wind. In front of him sat a shabby bowl with a few scattered coins inside.

A wave of sorrow surged in my heart. Instinctively, I reached into my pocket, hoping to find some spare change to give him. Just then, my mother, seeming to read my thoughts, paused and said gently, “Sweetheart, give him this bag of bread.” She took out a freshly bought bag of bread from our shopping bag and handed it to me.

Taking the bread, I quickly walked over to the elderly man, crouched down, and handed it to him. "Grandpa, this is for you," I said softly. The old man slowly lifted his head, his eyes filled with surprise and gratitude. His chapped lips trembled slightly as he whispered, “Thank you, little one.” At that moment, I saw tears glistening in his eyes.

On our way home, the cold wind continued to howl, but I felt an unusual warmth spreading through me. My mother’s act of kindness made me realize that true compassion is not just about offering material help but also about spreading warmth and care.

Though small, this event planted a seed of kindness in my heart, teaching me the importance of caring for others. It will always remain etched in my memory, inspiring me to continue doing little acts of kindness to bring warmth to those in need.

Bowen

My name is Bowen, a seventh-grade student. Fifteen years ago, I was born in a remote village with poor transportation and scarce resources. Though my childhood was filled with hardship, those early years remain some of my happiest memories.

When I was five, a sudden car accident took my father’s life, and my world changed forever. Unable to bear the burden of life, my mother remarried and disappeared without a trace. From then on, I was raised by my grandfather and grandmother, the two most important people in my life.

Back then, there were no school buses in our village, so I had to board at school. Every weekend, my grandfather would ride his electric scooter to pick me up. I dreaded winter because my grandfather had to endure the bitter cold, and I always worried that his scooter, without winter tires, might slip on the icy roads. The government poverty subsidies provided for our basic needs, but life was still difficult. I devoted myself to my studies, keeping myself busy and fulfilled.

Then, misfortune struck our family again. My grandmother, who had been battling liver cancer, passed away in the summer of 2024 after eight months of treatment. Her death plunged me into darkness, as if the entire world had lost its color. Her passing not only left an emotional void but also burdened us with overwhelming medical debt. The weight of it all nearly made me consider dropping out of school. Just when I was on the brink of despair, a light shone upon me.

My homeroom teacher, upon learning about my situation, visited my home with the school principal. They brought me school supplies and had a long conversation with my grandfather, helping me plan for the future. Every Friday, when my grandfather came to pick me up, my teacher would take time out of his busy schedule to talk with him, updating him on my progress. I also received financial aid, which helped support my family and my education. It was your generosity and kindness that pulled me back from the edge, allowing me to see hope again.

As 2024 quietly came to an end, a new year—2025—has arrived. I must heal my wounds and face the future with renewed determination. My greatest wish for 2025 is to improve my academic performance.

From the first day of winter break, I have followed my study plan diligently. I aim to use this time to review past material, fill in gaps, and preview next semester’s courses to build a strong foundation. I know I am not naturally gifted, so every achievement must be earned through hard work. To this end, I have established a strict schedule: waking up early to memorize English vocabulary and review subjects such as Chinese, moral studies, history, geography, and biology. During the day, I complete my holiday homework carefully and expand my knowledge with extracurricular readings. I also try to help my grandfather with household chores to lighten his burden.

When school resumes, I will stay focused in class, avoid distractions, take thorough notes, and use breaks to ask teachers questions or exercise to stay healthy. In the evenings, I will complete my homework attentively, review the day’s lessons, and prepare for the next day’s topics.

The most important milestone ahead is the high school entrance exam, which will shape my future. I am determined to study hard and excel in this crucial test. In the long run, I aspire to get into a good university, take care of my grandfather in his old age, give back to society, and help students facing hardships like mine.

Though life has thrown many challenges my way, with your support and encouragement, I have the confidence to face the future. I believe that as long as I hold onto hope and keep striving forward, I will one day create a bright future for myself.

Bowen
