Jemimah is a jovial and bright girl, who was deserted by her father at birth. The mother also left Jemimah and her siblings at a very early age. Her uncle, Jemimah’s caretaker, abused her. The neighbors intervened, and she was rescued by the local Administration senior officer and brought to the Children’s Home.

Martin and his siblings became orphaned at the death of their mother, and later their father also left them. The children used to go around to look for food. The Area Administration rescued and brought them to the Children's Home. The siblings adopted fast to the new environment and are doing very well in school.

People throughout the rural areas live in extreme poverty. Many are unable to feed their families as the region is frequently threatened by drought. Many children do not have even one meal a day. Infant mortality is high, addictions to drugs and alcohol are prevalent, HIV and AIDS is widespread, and political unrest and violence is an ongoing concern. Often, children as young as 5 or 6 years old are at risk of being sent to the streets because the family doesn’t have the resources to feed, clothe, educate, or care for their basic needs. Kenyan law requires that students wear uniforms, a major obstacle for poor families seeking education for their children.
